Common Mistakes When Choosing a Cosplay Location

Even the most impressive costume can lose some of its impact if it's photographed in the wrong setting. Over the years, I've noticed a few common mistakes that can make an otherwise great photoshoot more challenging than it needs to be.

Choosing a Location That Doesn't Fit the Character

The best cosplay images tell a story. Before selecting a location, ask yourself whether the environment supports the character you're portraying. A futuristic cyberpunk character naturally feels at home among glass skyscrapers and city lights, while an elf ranger or fantasy warrior often looks more convincing surrounded by forests, gardens, or open landscapes.

When the setting complements the costume, viewers immediately become immersed in the character's world.

Shooting During the Middle of the Day

North Carolina's summer sun can be harsh, especially during GalaxyCon weekend. Midday light creates deep shadows under helmets, hats, wigs, and brows while causing bright highlights that can wash out costume details.

Whenever possible, I recommend scheduling sessions shortly after sunrise or during the hour before sunset. The softer light is more flattering, temperatures are cooler, and many popular locations are far less crowded.

Forgetting How Far You'll Be Walking

Many convention costumes weren't designed for long walks through downtown Raleigh. Heavy armor, elaborate gowns, oversized props, wings, and platform shoes can quickly turn a short walk into an exhausting experience.

Before choosing a location, consider parking, transportation, rest breaks, and how easily you can move between shooting spots. Sometimes a location that's five minutes farther away by car is much more comfortable—and ultimately results in better photographs.

Ignoring the Background

When people first start planning a cosplay session, they often focus entirely on the costume. The background deserves just as much attention.

Busy streets filled with signs, parked cars, construction equipment, or random pedestrians can pull attention away from your character. One of the reasons I recommend specific Raleigh locations is that they offer clean compositions with fewer distractions, allowing the costume to remain the focal point.

Overlooking Costume Colors

The colors in your surroundings can either enhance your costume or compete with it.

A character wearing dark armor may disappear against a dark brick wall, while a vibrant costume can become lost in an equally colorful flower garden. I like to choose locations that provide contrast, helping the character stand out while still feeling naturally connected to the environment.

Not Planning for Crowds

Like many weekends during the year, GalaxyCon weekend brings thousands of visitors to downtown Raleigh. While that excitement is part of the experience, it can also make photography more difficult.

The solution isn't avoiding downtown—it's planning around the crowds. Early morning sessions, quieter side streets, or nearby parks often provide dramatically cleaner backgrounds without sacrificing convenience.

Trying to Fit Every Character Into the Same Location

One of the biggest advantages Raleigh offers is variety. Within a few minutes, you can move from modern skyscrapers to historic architecture, lush gardens, industrial streets, or sweeping park landscapes.

Instead of choosing the same location for every photoshoot, think about what best fits your character's personality and story. Matching the environment to the costume almost always creates images that feel more cinematic, immersive, and memorable.

You may be wondering - can I be photographed at all of these locations in one day?  The answer is yes, although I usually recommend selecting one or two nearby locations rather than trying to visit all of them. Spending more time creating images is almost always better than spending more time driving.
