Then we work together on the location, poses, lighting, composition, and storytelling to create photographs that showcase both the character and the person who brought them to life.

Cosplay photography isn't simply portrait photography with a costume.

The costume itself creates challenges—and opportunities—that require a different approach.

Character

How does your character stand? Move? Look at the camera? Hold a weapon? Interact with the environment?

Craftsmanship

Your costume may contain hundreds of hours of work. We want photographs that reveal the details you've put into it.

Storytelling

A strong cosplay image should make the viewer wonder: What's happening here?

Location

The right environment can make a character believable. A futuristic character might belong among Raleigh's glass towers. A fantasy warrior may need forests and open landscapes.

Lighting

Light establishes mood, separates the character from the background, and can transform an ordinary location into something cinematic.

You know your character. I know photography. We combine those two things to create something neither of us could create alone.

Choosing the Right Location

A beautiful location isn't necessarily the right location.

The environment should support your character and the story we're trying to tell.

Raleigh gives us an extraordinary range of possibilities—from the modern architecture of downtown to historic buildings, gardens, wooded landscapes, open fields, and locations capable of creating something that feels completely removed from the city.

And sometimes the best location isn't the one closest to the main cosplay event, like GalaxyCon or the Festival of Legends.

During the Session

This is where the collaboration really begins.

We'll work through a variety of images rather than simply finding one pose and repeating it.

Depending on your character and vision, that might include:

Character portraits
Powerful, expressive images that capture who the character is.

Action portraits.
Movement, weapons, dynamic poses, and techniques such as shutter drag and creative lighting.

Environmental portraits
Placing your character within a setting that becomes part of the story.

Detail portraits.
Images that showcase armor, props, makeup, weapons, accessories, and craftsmanship.

Storytelling images.
Photographs that suggest something is happening rather than simply showing someone posing.

From Convention Cosplay to Cinematic Artwork

Some of my favorite cosplay photographs begin with an idea that goes beyond simply documenting the costume.

> A crystal ball can become a portal.

> A book can become part of a magical scene.

> A forest can become another world.

A little atmosphere, creative lighting, careful composition, and thoughtful post-production can turn a cosplay portrait into something that feels like a scene from a movie or a game.

The goal isn't to make the photograph look real. The goal is to make the story feel real.

Some sessions call for authentic environmental portraits. Others call for something much more ambitious.

If your vision involves an elaborate scene, unusual props, atmospheric effects, or creative compositing, we can discuss what is possible and determine how best to bring the idea to life.

Planning a Cosplay Session Around a Cosplay or Event?

Whether you're attending GalaxyCon Raleigh, Dragon Con, an anime convention, fantasy festival, comic or gaming convention, or another cosplay event to showcase your character (and your superpower!), the event doesn't have to be the only opportunity to photograph your cosplay.

In fact, some of the best cosplay photographs happen outside the event itself.

Convention floors and event spaces are exciting, but they're also crowded, noisy, and filled with visual distractions. A dedicated photoshoot gives us time to slow down, choose a location that fits your character, work with the available light, and create images that tell a story.

You might schedule a session:

Before the event, while your costume is fresh and you're not yet exhausted from a full day of convention activities.
During the event, with an early-morning or evening session away from the crowds.
After the event, when you have more time to explore a location and create something truly ambitious.
On a completely different day, when the goal is photography rather than attending the convention.

The convention doesn't have to be the destination. It can be the inspiration.

If you're traveling to Raleigh for an event, we can use the city as our backdrop and create something specifically around your character.

And if you're willing to plan a dedicated session, we can go beyond the convention district entirely.

That's where locations like the North Carolina Museum of Art or Dorothea Dix Park become especially interesting.

Your Cosplay Doesn't Have to End When the Convention Does

Maybe you've never thought about having professional photographs made of your cosplay. That's perfectly okay.

But consider what you've created. You've spent hours—or perhaps months—building the costume, finding the right pieces, perfecting the details, and bringing a character to life. When the convention is over, the costume may go back into the closet, but the character and the work you put into it don't have to disappear with it.

A dedicated cosplay portrait session gives us the opportunity to preserve that work—and turn it into something more than a memory of the convention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an experienced cosplayer?

Absolutely not. You don't need to know how to pose or perform for the camera. That's part of what we work on together.

Can you photograph armor and elaborate costumes?

Yes. In fact, location, posing, and lighting become especially important when working with large or elaborate costumes.

Can we photograph action poses?

Absolutely. Depending on the character and location, we can incorporate movement, weapons, shutter drag, creative lighting, and other techniques to create dynamic images.

Can we use props?

Definitely. Props are often an important part of telling your character's story.

Do you photograph original characters?

Yes. Original characters can be especially fun because there isn't an established visual interpretation we have to follow.

Can we photograph more than one cosplay?

We can discuss multiple costumes when planning your session. The number of costumes and locations will affect how we structure the shoot.

Do you only photograph cosplayers during GalaxyCon?

No. GalaxyCon is simply one of the times when Raleigh becomes especially active with cosplay. Dedicated cosplay sessions can be planned throughout the year. Cosplay photography can happen at any time of year. Halloween, Christmas, and other seasonal costumes can make great subjects for a dedicated session, too.

What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate?

We'll discuss weather when planning your session and determine whether we should reschedule, modify the location, or adapt the concept.
